Prepare For Success On The SATs

SAT testing season can be a stressful time for students and parents alike. The need for high scores to secure a spot in a prestigious university puts pressure on students to perform at their highest levels. Some students do very well with standardized tests, but for those who don’t, the pressure to do better can be burdensome. The good news is that there are many SAT prep resources available for students to improve scores and test-taking skills.

There are a number of books and CD/DVDs available for students who are motivated enough to study on their own. These can work well for some, though with regular schoolwork, homework and other pressures on students, it can be easy for these self-study courses to fall through the cracks.

Attending a SAT prep class, either in person or online, is an effective method because it requires a specific time commitment. There are also teachers, and sometime other students, to answer questions and discuss topics of concern. Signing up for one of these types of courses is often the best path for test success. Also, many courses will offer guarantees of higher scores and will refund tuition fees if scores don’t improve. This can be a nice guarantee for parents, ensuring that their money is being well spent.

Whatever the method, it is important to go into the test as prepared as possible. There are many fairly simple things any student can do to prepare. Review math formulas and principles. Study vocabulary words and review reading comprehension skills. Take practice tests often and focus on areas where scores are not improving. Most importantly, on the day of the test, stay calm and focused. Don’t let stress or anxiety distract you from reading each question carefully and considering each answer. Relax and focus and you should perform well!
